communicating powerful stories in science and health

I am a science and health communicator with a decade of experience handling complex subjects with care. My broad portfolio touches on a range of topics in medicine and the life sciences from HIV and chemistry to addiction and recovery. My favorite stories are those that bridge the intricacies of an elegantly designed experiment and the nuances of lived experience.

Project Portfolio

Saving Lives with Peer Support

Chetwyn “Arrow” Archer has saved hundreds of lives in his community by connecting people who use drugs with Narcan and other lifesaving care.

**As a science writer at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), I collaborated with HIV.gov and NIDA colleagues to produce this video series with a very simple message: Understanding drug use is critical to addressing the HIV epidemic. "At the Intersection: Stories of Research, Compassion, and HIV Services for People Who Use Drugs" highlights the ways in which evidence-based harm reduction and person-centered care is necessary to end the HIV epidemic for people who use drugs.**

About Us: Lived Experience and Science Writing

Panelists discuss how intimate knowledge has enriched their coverage of scientific subjects — from COVID to medical racism to chemistry.

**I brought together science communicators for an engaging conversation on the benefits, perils, and surprises that come with bringing one's own story into their work. Click to watch me moderate this DC Science Writers Association panel featuring KLCC's Brian Bull, Apoorva Mandavilli of the New York Times, AP's Kat Stafford, and fellow DCSWA member Ari Remmel.**

Why are Drugs so Hard to Quit?

People can heal from addiction—especially when they get the support they need to relieve withdrawal symptoms, navigate triggers, and make positive changes.

**I was the main script writer on this popular plain language video for the National Institute on Drug Abuse. I consulted with our staff scientists to ensure the content was accurate and relatable. I also worked closely with the animators to create engaging, inclusive, and non-stigmatizing visuals.**

What is Harm Reduction?

We hear from people who use drugs, people who are in recovery, and harm reduction professionals on what harm reduction is (and isn’t) in their own words.
